RE: Minecraft Ran Out of memory glitch
Thank you. I've been disconnecting randomly a LOT because of this. I'll give it a try and post here if it worked!

Just beware guys, if you allocate too much memory to Minecraft then you won't have enough memory for other programs, and you might lose data or you might not be able to run certain programs. But in most cases that wont happen. Just check you're task manager to see how much ram you're using.

Confused That's what a swap partition/pagefile is for; to make sure the scenario that you posed will (almost) never happen.

RE: Minecraft Ran Out of memory glitch
Yes nate, but most of the time in order to run the entire "vanilla" OS is about 1.5MBs. (Windows)(Vista is like 1.78 from my experiences). I have mine set to 2 mbs, and I never go over 1mbs...(4 gbs of total RAM)

That's because of what Frenchy mentions. The OS allocates available random access memory efficiently by "deleting" some unused data or cache (I forgot which one its called lol) when necessary. You don't need to have the entire minecraft map rendered at one time, so the computer and program decide when to delete blocks that haven't been used and probably won't be used. (Not perfect system so you may need to re-render blocks that were removed.)

So minecraft never overpowers your RAM. But that is not to speak for your CPU and GPU.
Note: Most newer CPUs can process minecraft just fine. Its the GPU that may be the limiting factors in this equation. (Like me Sad)
